versus Quantitative:
Traditionally, qualitative research addresses questions such as how and why,
whereas quantitative research addresses questions such as how much, to what
extent, and how many. In and of itself, understanding the how and the why will
justify a qualitative research phase. However, when developing a quantitative
survey instrument to assess customer opinions, qualitative research provides
the perspective of the customer to the survey process. Specifically, the structure
and vocabulary of any survey instrument must be such that customers understand
the questions within the proper context. For example, if a customer is being
asked about his or her satisfaction with a given product, he or she will probably
have a difficult time answering if a term used to describe an aspect of the
product mentioned in the survey is not the same as the term the customer commonly
uses. Qualitative research ensures that the instrument is relevant and meaningful
